The human rights monitoring organization Amnesty International reports that hundreds of Azeri-Iranians have been arrested by Iranian authorities since May. The arrests were made in connection with demonstrations by Azeri-Iranians, marking the anniversary of protests held in May 2006 -- protests that were brutally suppressed by Iran’s security services. The protests were sparked by the publication of a cartoon in a state-run newspaper depicting a cockroach speaking in the Azeri language...

The above named are among hundreds of people detained since 16 May. There have recently been widespread demonstrations marking the anniversary of demonstrations against the publication in May 2006 of a cartoon in a state-run newspaper, which was considered offensive to a great many Azerbaijanis. They are at risk of torture or other ill-treatment. Amir Mohammad Bana’i Sadeq and Ahad Razavi (also spelled as Ehed Rezevi) are said to have been tortured in recent days.

Azerbaijani rights activist Reza Daghestani was released on 19 March, on a bail of around 40,000 US dollars. He had been arrested on 21 February 2008 at his family home in the city of Oroumiye. His home was searched and his computer, CDs, papers and books were confiscated, along with printouts of his newsletters.

Friends and relatives of Azerbaijani-Iranian human rights activist Abbas Lisani fear for his life. He has reportedly been transferred from Ahar prison to a prison in central Iran. Mr. Lisani’s wife, Rugeyye, says the transfer was illegal and her husband was badly beaten by prison officials for resisting deportation. His friends believe he was transferred in order to further isolate him and make him more vulnerable to abuse by Iranian authorities...

Prisoner of conscience Abbas Lisani was moved to a new prison on 6 March 2008 so that his flogging sentence can be carried out. He is now in imminent danger of being flogged, which is cruel and inhuman treatment amounting to torture; Iran is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which expressly prohibits torture.

Jelil Ghanilou, an Azerbaijani cultural and linguistic right activist, was released on 27 February 2008 and is now at home with his family in the city of Zanjan in western Iran. Bail amounting to around US$86,000 was paid for his release.

Prisoners of conscience Sa’id and Elirza Metinpour were released on bail on 27 February 2008 and are now at home with their family in the city of Zenjan. Bail amounting to five billion rials (about US$540,000) and one billion rials (about US$110,000) for Sa’id and Elirza Metinpour respectively was paid in the form of several property deeds.
